Marketing for Local Artists; Poetry, Art, Sculpture, Photography or Paintings

By Lance Winslow As a freelance marketing consultant in my retirement often small business people will approach me and ask my advice to help them market their art business. One thing I find interesting is most are very Internet Literate and have some marketing savvy as well. This sure helps when we sit down to discuss things they might do to market better and sell more of their art, sculptures, paintings, photography or artistic creations whatever they might be. Do you own a small business, which produces art? I would say that you should put your efforts in any business where it will do the most good. So in the case of a local artist; Loaning art with price tags and business cards on the frames to Hotels, Time Shares, Restaurants, travel centers, airport lobbies, visitor bureaus, real estate offices, chambers of commerce; makes sense. Plus writing articles for print in Tourist information material, newspapers, magazines, also post them online. Collections of poetry or articles in eBooks compilations, in various categories; Seasonal “Holiday Poetry,” “Local Poetry,” “Best Poetry of 2007″ mix and match compilations to give away and perhaps Illustrated eBooks with poetry for each picture. Consider also a weekly or monthly Ezine with the latest sculptures, progress, art, etc. Grass roots; Flyers on Pizza Boxes, Art Exhibits, flyers at Chamber, visitors centers, inserts in visitor information, A-Frame Signage, Roadside signs with web-address this highway adopted by YourWebSite.com, etc. What is so great is there are many sources on the Internet to find other ideas such as Judy Cullins website on marketing online and her advice is great and she is right. Everyone should invest in reading her articles or reading her books in my opinion. It sure beats the hard way. And well I ought to know having built my business from scratch. I hope this article will propel thought into 2007. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Find a Penpal and Share Your Life

By Jason Montag Life is full of experiences and we all strive to gain all that we can. The thing is, what is an experience, if it cannot be shared. Share it with a penpal. Penpals have been around as long as we can remember. Soldiers off to war were able to correspond with people back at home and learn about and enjoy life in the free world. The fact that the majority of these men and women did not know their penpals prior to leaving for the war did not matter. We all seek friendship and common ground with those we are close to and that same thing can be gained through the written word. If you have never written to a penpal it is an experience that you will never forget. It is just like meeting a new friend at the gym or the grocery store. You will be able to communicate an share your life with someone that you would never meet in you everyday circles. That is pretty exciting isn’t it? I have had a few of the same penpals for years and have never met them in person, however that does not take away from the times and experiences that we have shared. I came across my first penpal through a service that just matches people from across the world by interest. Do not get me wrong this is not a dating strategy; it is only a way to meet new and interesting people. Thanks to my penpals I was able to learn the inside thoughts of people living in Germany, Italy and even England. I would not trade them for the world. Joanne and Terry have been a huge part of my life. You know when you have an idea or question you ask the people you see everyday and that are exposed to the same things you are. I have the chance ot ask people from completely different walks of life and that is wonderful. If you have never had a penpal I highly recommend it. Glass Beads

By Jason Gluckman Glass beads present an artistic spectrum of beauty with value. They come in vibrant colors, shape and finishes, and add a magical touch to the product. There are different types of glass beads like Czech glass beads, handmade dichroic glass, Millefiori, lamp work beads and even bumpy glass beads. They are available in different colors and sizes which artisans pick up to complete their canvas. These beads are sometimes given different types of fancy finishes like Aurora Borealis or druk glass. Where druk glass beads are perfectly rounded and optically polished, multi-colored lamp work bead strands are in shapes ranging from fishes to twisted ovals. Luminous dichroic glass is another bead type which comes in a multitude of shapes. Then there are crackle glass beads. Czech glass beads with a pearl finish are great values because of the high quality and tremendous variety in colors, sizes and shapes. Since glass becomes molten when heated to a certain temperature, glass artists can create any shape as well as layers, while holding the glass over a flame. A bead with raised decorations, bumps, dots, sparkly feathering, with foil inside or other applied decoration, is most likely a lamp-work bead. Many glass artists produce unbelievably complicated beautiful collectors’ items in glass. The rainbow of colors and textures of beads available today gives infinite design ideas. The number of beads per strand and strands per hank depends on the size and weight of the beads. There are glass pearls, art glass beads and cane glass beads. You can find glass pearls in all shapes. Glass beads are expensive compared to other beads but enhance the beauty of the product. They can also be added with embroidery pattern or used with sequins as well. A transparent glass bead has the tendency to reflect the base color and can be beautifully used with any color. Beads provides detailed information on Beads, Wholesale Beads, Glass Beads, Gemstone Beads and more. Beads is affiliated with Wholesale Bath Salts. Fly Fishing Utah’s Green River

By Scott Barrus Imagine yourself floating in a drift boat with a professional oarsman, on the crystal clear Green River. On either side of you are towering red sandstone walls, ponderosa pine trees, and abundant wildlife. Beneath you lies one of the largest populations of trout anywhere in the world. As you gaze at the fish and beautiful surroundings your guide yells “SET THE HOOK!!” for the 20th time. Only 5 more miles of river to go… The Green River has 3 very different sections of river to fish and enhance your angling skills. The sections are known as the “A” “B” and “C” sections. The “A” section offers an insane amount of trout. Some Division of Wildlife Resource estimates boast that there are 14,000 trout in a 1 mile section on the Green River’s “A” section. “A” section = tons of fish, beautiful canyon corridor, but it is not a secret to fishermen or fisherwomen, as it is the most accessible of the three sections. The “B” section offers less fishing pressure, and a few less fish as compared to “A”. However, the average size of trout is typically larger than the “A” section. Many days throughout the year, the “B” section is where the best fishing on the river is. The “C” section of the river is fairly open and sometimes windy. Large opportunistic trout lurk on the shelves and banks waiting for an offering. This is the best section for experienced anglers looking for trophy fish, and plenty of solitude. A busy day on the “C” section would entail seeing 1 other boat on the river. The Green River is world renown for it’s terrestrial dry fly fishing. The famous Cicada hatch in June offers an incredibly visual dry fly experience. At times you may have fish fighting over which one gets to eat your presentation first. Cicada’s are large “locusts” that live as nymphs in the roots of trees along the river coridor. After a gestation period of 1 to 17 years - depending on the species - the cicadas emerge, molt, and start flying and buzzing around to attract mates. After about 1 month the cicada ( if not eaten by a hungry trout) will mate, lay eggs and die. Typically the emergence and death cycles offer the best Cicada fishing. Every season is different. Some years we encounter 4 different cicada hatches at once. Other years you hardly notice their presence. Therefore the hatch is hit or miss, but if you hit it, you will always remember it. After the cicada hatch you will find abundant varieties of big bugs. Late June thru early July also offers great pale morning dun hatches (pmd’s) as well as yellow sally stoneflies. Large dry fly fishing is good from June all the way thru October. From crickets, hoppers, beetles, and ants to the annual bug that none of the guides have seen before. The Green offers everyone opportunities at dry fly caught fish. Other prolific hatches on the Green River include the Blue Wing Olives in spring and fall, caddis in the summer, and midges year round. The Blue Wing Olives (BWO’s) usually begin hatching in late March with the best hatches mid-April thru early May. There are times when you may see hundreds of fish rising among the thousands of BWO’s floating on the surface. The BWO hatch is a must fish for anyone looking for an incredible mayfly fishing experience. The BWO hatch offers you the chance to pick off rising fish one by one. Nymph fishing is always good on the Green. Freshwater shrimp “scuds” and midges are very abundant, and combine as most of the Green River diet. Sculpins, and small fish also offer larger trout a more satisfying meal. Spinner Fall Guide Service has been guiding on the Green River since 1986. All of Spinner Fall’s guides have a minimum of 8 years guiding experience under their wading belts , and focus on the fun and teaching aspects of fly fishing. Spinner Fall’s guides all prefer to fish dry flies and do so more than any other outfitter on the Green River. Please check out our website for more information http://www.spinnerfall.com Thanks for reading and Tight Lines! Scott Barrus has been flyfishing the Green River since 1990 and guiding since 1998. He has guided in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, and flyfished in Mexico, Costa Rica, Ireland, Canada, Florida, and all over the Western U.S. The Green River is still his favorite place to fish as it offers the best visual trout fishing experience anywhere. Sacred Love - Healing a Broken Heart; Part 3

By Christopher Walker Knocking down De Fence… We withdraw from love because we expect something and dont get it. We take offense to something, so the ego is unwilling to let you play anymore. The solution is to change our expectation, to knock down DE fence, but instead the ego takes offence. In the American football game there are the defensive and the offensive groups within each team. The offensive group attack and try to score points. Now that is the game of football. But in relationships, there are different rules. For every point you gain, you lose another. Balance means neutral scores. Taking offence means that someone has upset something in your ego and you are reacting to it. Now consider this, maybe they are right, but you just dont want to admit it. If you are accused by your lover of some crime or ill doing, and can say, Yes, I am capable of that and worthy of love for it, you will pass the whole journey of growth back to your lover. Truth in Love Honesty, they cry Honesty they cry But really they mean conformity they ask for honesty But condemn anything that doesnt fit their expectations. Is that honest? Our expectations? Maybe the first honesty is admitting That everything we know Is a lie. Natures law pervades every walk of life so it is not specifically what you think that matters; it is how you think that makes the difference. You must change how you think from one-sided learning (causes depression) to balanced thinking (causes love). Most business power and success comes from lies, or at least the ability not to tell the truth. Secrets. Telling lies means withholding the truth, and therefore holding great power. So, in your relationship, if you want great power, then its best to withhold the truth, not reveal your emotions, blame your partner and tell lies. This is a very powerful way to approach relationship, and a perfect way to prevent vulnerability. But if you want love. Well thats a different story. Love means naked, raw, honest, exposed, vulnerability. I hear people say, I need to trust before I become vulnerable and that is a horrible lie. The only person you need to trust in being vulnerable is you. Shame makes us worry about trust. Why would we be holding back anything if it werent for shame. Shame means we are not worthy of love, therefore, we cant trust ourselves being open and natural and vulnerable. So we seek out people with the same ego issues and open up to them, only because they agree that we are victims. Remember as a child youd put your hands up to your face, and because you couldnt see people, you automatically thought they couldnt see you. My daughter did this all the time when she was being reprimanded for playing up. Shed just put her little open palms in front of her eyes and disappear, as far she was concerned, into nowhere. This made me realise how easy it is to shame someone in the process of helping them learn. Power comes from lies. Love comes from truth. Power comes from not revealing who we are. Love comes from vulnerability. Most people dont know how to love. So they ask for ego backup instead. They go looking for ego support, Oh, yes, you poor man, she was such a nasty thing, now lets process her, so you feel well. If you want to waste your entire life in therapy, and finding equally deluded friends who are emotionally inept, then holding back is perfect. However, it is not love, and certainly not the food for sacred relationship. In my relationships, I am very honest. Right up front. If I am falling in love with someone else I speak out. If I am finished in the old relationship, I speak out. This is not enjoyable for either person, but it is love. Since my marriage more than 20 years ago, I have tried to be honest in my relationships. Sometimes people say I lie. I must. Sometimes I tell the truth, but the person just doesnt want to hear it. They say, No, thats not how you feel but it is. I believe that lovers come together with love, they process emotions as part of their growth in love, they stay together in a relationship because their dreams overlap, and they stay together in love whether they admit it or not. Truth is an powerless, raw, vulnerable experience. Emotions reveal a lot of truth. Truth of emotions is not the truth, it is your truth. So, your truth can become food for growth for both you and your partner. Some people tell the truth because they are guilty and want to get the guilt off their chest. That is not telling the truth, it is passing the buck. If you are carrying guilt you are far wiser to process that guilt until there is love. Then share. But passing your guilt to your partner turns to their pain and not your pain. This is really messed up. In a relationship, things happen that you are not proud of. But everything is worthy of love. So you can come to love for yourself no matter what happened. You need to keep an open heart to your partner if they share truth. That means you may both have some work to do if there is news that comes out unexpectedly. But everything is worthy of love. The Lies My eyes, can lie, any actor knows this. My words are constructed, all children perfect it. My heart is manipulative, loneliness guarantees the compromise. My hopes are ever changing, because my world is too My past is irrelevant, although I may carry it as a burden My Love is my own, I cannot love you more than me My soul is intangible; any attempt to personalise it is the Ego trying to survive Who am I even when you know me? Are you really ever able to know me other than to fit me into a box and say, “Ah, he’s one of them!” Even if I do fit that box, have you really got to know me, or just a part? If you really want to get to know me, your Ego needs to die. Are you ready for that? Are you ready to dissolve all your judgments of who you should and shouldnt be, and all your anger and bitterness from your past? I challenge you in this book, to try it. I suspect, that if you are looking for love, but cant really open to it, then something from the past is hindering your truth Lying is the exact same behavior. We think that if we shut up, keep a secret, or put up a story to cover something, we are behind a shield, and cant get caught. Its like dressing a pig in an Armani suit and wondering why people are suspicious. Lies deceive the willing, but only on the surface. Deep down, people know. Consciously or unconsciously, they know. And they extract a huge retribution. A person who is lying arouses suspicion. Now the accusations might be completely off target, but the suspicion is absolutely valid. For example, lets imagine that you take a phone call at the office from your ex and you enjoy a few moments reminiscing about the past, almost flirting, as you both fantasise about some amazingly romantic experience you had. Now, not everyone has a partner who is aware enough to understand that these things are normal. So you get home, and discretion being the better part of valor, you keep it under your chest. Then your partner says, Whats wrong? and you say, Nothings wrong, why does something always have to be wrong? and they say, You just dont seem yourself tonight and then you say, Would you get off my back, dont you trust me or something? and then your partner says, Yes, I mean no, yes, I trust you, but you seem strange. It starts to escalate and the result is they start to withdraw. So, you lied (or kept a secret) because you feared their reaction, and now they are in reaction, not because of what you did, but because you lied to hide what you did. Like a child you thought that by keeping a secret, putting your words up in front of your face, that people cant see you, but they can. And more importantly, so can you. Nobody can lie to you more than you. If you dont want to know that someone is lying youll deny your intuitions. On the other side, youll need to know that the intuition is always right in energy, but rarely right in form. Now this can save you a lot of heartache. If you accuse your partner of having an affair, you are expressing your greatest fear, and by the laws of nature youll cause it. The spirit of the inner child One of the most impactful healing experiences in my entire life was in counseling after my marriage break up where I learned about my inner child, or in another language, my spirit. After 12 months getting to trust the process of counseling, my counselor helped me find something quite amazing. There, underneath my manhood, was a rejected child. The only way to describe this child is to tell you the story. We all have a psychological child within us. This child is innocent, vulnerable and wantless. This child has no age or form, yet it has all the beautiful qualities of a newborn babe. This child like innocence never changes. Over time, we get an impression of the world in which we live, and if things go wrong, or are not safe, we blame this child for being so vulnerable, and try to cover it or in the least, change it. Like everyone else, there were things about my innocent child I always wanted to change. I resented that he was so soft. I was annoyed that he was clumsy and vulnerable. I was so embarrassed that he was so accident prone I blamed him for everything that went wrong, including humiliating me. It is a part of us all we want to keep secret and its different for everyone. Ironically, I was later to find out when I was doing advanced Zen, or sitting in a sweat lodge in Canada, that this secret part of me was my greatest strength. The process of finding him was so easy, but what to do with him? I was in a huge divorce, I wanted my ex-wife back. I was having more ups and downs than a yoyo because I didnt know how to look after him. That child inside, I had given to my wife and said, metaphorically, Look after this part of me please, because it gets in the way of my career, my business, my life. In my counseling sessions it became obvious that I was still trying to give my child to my ex-wife. My counselor said, Now we have met your child, maybe we can find somewhere safer for him until you are ready to look after him yourself. She offered to be the caretaker, but this didnt feel right for some reason. Instead I got a flash of where he wanted to be and took him to a park, a tree that I loved, and climbed that tree and sat with him. I placed my spirit high in the branches of a tree. To be safe, nurtured and cared for. It was the beginning of my spiritual path. I suddenly knew the difference between being in the world but not of it. There was something precious, my essence, I couldnt change, fix, modify, use, sell, entertain. I found my spirit, my inner child. The next few years were spent getting to know him, learning to love him. Suddenly there was a quietness to life. Suddenly, there was a beautiful awareness, that if my child was safe, I could go anywhere I chose, I was free to be content in the world without a lover to make me so. This spirit sits inside every human, an inner child. To connect with this spirit, go and pick up a child in your arms under the age of three. Let them fall asleep in your arms. And in those moments when they are just closing their eyes, feel that beautiful energy that comes from them. Just when their little ego stops struggling to have more ice cream, or more milk, or more toys, or more something, just when they really stop wanting, there is the spirit of the child. This is the child within. The spirit. A sacred relationship is one in which this child is shared with someone. It must be welcomed. It must be safe in your arms and then safe in your lovers arms. This child is not a playful, fun, creative child. It is a sleeping beauty that gets awakened with a kiss. It is a simple stillness that feels tender and gentle, wants for nothing, feels content in your arms and feels safe with your lover. The ego is built to cover that child (spirit), the ego is built to change it, eradicate the vulnerability of it. The ego is built to be in the world without that child. We learn tricks like giving that vulnerability away by handing your inner child to someone, Look after this for me while I go off to work. This is the conventional way to have a relationship, but it makes relationships sick. And hiding that child, to make it safe from your lover, is even sicker. It is really just judging your own worthiness for love. Your spirit, your inner child, is what makes you complete. It doesnt need anything except for you to love it, to want it, and it doesnt deserve to be handed over. There is nothing your spirit has done or not done that isnt worthy of love. When I do a consultation with a person, I always meet them first for an interview. If I cannot hear their childs voice within, I cannot give guidance. It doesnt matter if that person cannot hear what is going on within them, but if I cant feel that child, that spirit within, then I cannot hear the truth that is being blocked. After some more months in counseling, I went back to that park, I climbed up into that tree (I was 34), and placed that little spirit, deep into my heart. As I did he woke, he smiled, and from that day to now, he has guided my life, every step. I wont type a keynote without his presence inside me (I never put him on display), I share his happiness with everyone I meet. I keep him space from those who would not understand his beauty and I never, never, give him away. Never again. When I travel to Nepal I sit on the top of dream mountain. A place where I believe any dream that begins from and includes the inner child, comes true. I take my child everywhere I go, and here on this mountain, he sings. He sings to the angels from whom he came, he sings of love and sunshine. He is my angel, he is my love, never lonely while I am with him. I take clients to this home in the clouds, and by the time they reach this place they are ready. Their child speaks, their heart opens, and their dreams are known. This vision quest isnt a formal thing. The spirit sings from here, on the highest mountains, and all the world hears the echo. On this mountain in Nepal, dream mountain, our spirit surfaces and the ego steps aside. Think of what you dislike or hate most about yourself. Now think about your childhood, and if this part of you always caused you to suffer. You will begin to know your inner child. It is the most precious pearl. Nature wrapped this special secret inside a package for safe keeping, wrapped it so well to protect it, to soften its hardships, nature wrapped it in your ego. Are you ready to open the gift? A precious pearl Treat this wonderful spirit within you, this child, as the precious pearl. Value it, more than your life, more than anything. Feel the beauty of it, know that it is not frail, just recognise how precious it is. Grown from the belly of a shell, deep in the ocean, from a single grain of sand. Your spirit. It wants nothing, needs nothing, and therefore has everything. Now, unwrap it from that silk cloth you call protection. Remove the coverings, and another, and another. Get past the idea that someone wants to steal it, unwrap another layer again. Learn to care for it, find a safe place to keep it. Find a place to keep this spirit within you and make a promise that where you go, she or he comes with you, and if it is not there, you are not there. Its not a burden carrying it around, so dont hand it to someone. The ego, the guardian of your inner self does a beautiful job. It makes you safe, wraps you in protection. It guards against everything. It learns to expect the best and worst, it begins to preempt what will happen, it expects and projects itself into the future. It is the master of prediction. Your inner spirit does not fear, you do. Your inner child is not wrong or stupid, you are. There is nothing that can damage it, nothing you can change. Nothing can hurt your inner self; nothing can hurt your love. Only your ego can be damaged. There is nothing that can hurt your inner spirit. Only the wrapping can be hurt. And isnt that what you want? To undo the wrapping and fall in love again. Can you see there is nothing to fear but fear itself. There is nothing to protect, it was a learning, and now there can be an unlearning. That is always the great discovery of self-help. In the end, there is no self to help. There is only love. To bring “light” back into the heart Contemplating the meanings of the revealed books of the sacred traditions, and the words of the saints, since these perform an action upon the heart, removing its illusions, healing its ills, restoring its strength. The same function can be served by inspired art, literature, and music, which also perform an action upon us. Another cure for the heart is keeping one’s stomach empty. Any excess of food hardens the heart. Fasting is the opposite of the subtle and not so subtle addictions with which we numb ourselves to the experience of heart. When through fasting we expose the heart’s pain to ourselves, we become more emotionally vulnerable and honest. And then, can the heart be healed. Prayer before sunrise is a powerful inspiration. In these early morning hours the activity of the world has been reduced to its minimum, the psychic atmosphere has become still, and we are more able to reach the depths of concentration upon our own conscious. Finally, keeping company with “heart” people can restore faith and health to the heart. It is only a matter of degree to move from the ailing heart to the purified heart. Centre yourself and all your attention in the reality of divine love, which has the power to unify our fragmented being and reconnect us with unity at all levels of existence. Minimising your psychological distortions by over coming the slavery of your attractions, and seeing beyond the veil of selfishness - Then, in that state, we may discover a deep receptivity a spiritual presence within. When we can centre ourselves and our attention on the presence of divine reality, we not only become unified within ourselves, we recognise our unity with all of life. This is the unifying function of the heart. Knowing Love. Chris Walker is a world leading change agent, an environmentalist and author of more than 20 books. Years Lost To Misdiagnosis

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Marilyn_Mastin] Marilyn Mastin I was diagnosed with Epilepsy at the age of three months, when my mother realized I was not following things properly with my eyes. I was taken into hospital and kept there under observation. Nothing happened to me there. I had no other strange episodes, but instead of just sending me home and asking my parents to keep an eye on me, Doctors put me on Barbiturates and my mother had to feed them to me in my baby milk. I had no other symptoms of epilepsy, however, at the age of five I suffered Rheumatic Fever and, I didn’t know it then, but that is when problem really started, because I began to suffer pains in many parts of my body and they never went away. At the age of six, I had my first test for Epilepsy, which turned out to be normal. Doctors made the decision that I should come off the barbiturates, but because I was suffering from Anxiety, Dizziness and confusion, they put me on tranquilisers. In those days, tranquilisers were the answer to everything that doctors didn’t understand. It didn’t matter that I was only six year old! I actually suffer from Fibromyalgia Syndrome, which used to be called, Chronic Rheumatism and Fibrositis. The main difficulty with Fibromyalgia is the side affects of the condition, which include, problems with concentration, bouts of confusion, Anxiety and Chronic Fatigue, sleep disturbances and lack of co-ordination. I started suffering from FMS after having Rheumatic Fever, but I would be in my fifties before my condition was actually diagnosed. For much of my earlier life I continued on many different forms of tranquiliser, because doctors did not know what to make of me. Then I started on the Epilepsy medication, because they did not know what else might be causing my problems. I had begun passing out, so the Doctors decided that I must have Epilepsy after all! They weren’t interested in the pains I was suffering, because the could not find a reason for them. There attitude was that my pains were imaginary. Fibromyalgia is a much misunderstood condition and needs to become better known, in the medical community and by sufferers of chronic pain, who might have the condition. The main problem is that Fibromyalgia is only diagnosed when other tests have failed to reach a diagnosis. It is diagnosed by exerting pressure on various parts of the body. If enough of those pressure points are found to be painful, the condition is diagnosed. Fibromyalgia causes sufferers to be unable to fall into a restful sleep. Antidepressants are usually used to enable the sufferer to relax better and fall into REM sleep more easily. The condition is quite common, so many of you, reading this article might have FMS. If you think you may do, see a rheumatologist and get it checked out. That way, you will avoid the pitfalls that I fell into, and you will have a correct diagnosis. Prepaid Cell Phones And Credit Reports

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Nikola_Govorko]Nikola Govorko Prepaid cell phones are great in case that you have bad credit. Long time ago when prepaid service was first offered this used to be its main advantage for the user. It did not matter if your credit was lousy, you could still get a cell phone and use it just like if you had a perfect credit. Cell phones are so common these days it is really difficult to find someone who does not have one. Even if you do, it is in most cases by personal choice (your author was one of these, for the longest time I refused to get it, butt becoming a father changed my mind). All of us need to be able to communicate with a person we care for and that is the main benefit of cell phones. That is why prepaid service is great, you can get it any time you want and nobody will check your credit history for it. So what are the main differences (concerning credit checks) between prepaid and non-prepaid service? Prepaid With prepaid service you simply buy a cell phone, number and minutes you intend to spend talking and there is no need to worry about how it will impact your credit score. Or for that mater, whether you are going to get a cell phone in the first place. Prepaid service providers just do not care about your credit rating because in order to use the service it has to be paid for in advance. Because it is paid in advance you pose no risk for the company that provides the service. The good thing about it is that you are %100 in control of your budget and it will not show on your credit report no matter what you do. But remember, prepaid service is not just for people with bad credit, it is far easier to control your spending this way and you do not lose any of the cell phone service benefits. It is especially suitable for people who do not use cell phones a lot. You do not have the pay monthly bills but are still connected if you need it. Non-prepaid Regular, non prepaid service will check your credit score before you are approved. Credit bureaus are constantly informed by creditors about your payment history, including the cell phones companies. So remember that an unpaid cell phone bill can result in you being turned down for some other more important credit demand like home or a new car. With prepaid cell phone service it is never going to happen, because you are %100in control of your budget at any time. It will enable you to easily avoid any trap caused by over spending. How to Make Your Career Resolutions Stick

By Dr. Robert Karlsberg A recent study by executive search firm Korn-Ferry revealed that 70% of executives plan to make a career related New Years resolution. Yet experience shows that more than 80% of them will be significantly off-track before the end of the first quarter. Why? Distraction — the number one enemy of success. Here are some tips to beat the odds and make your resolutions stick this year: Set Inspiring Long-term Goals. Short-term objectives are fine, but dont often provide the necessary inspiration to stay the course. Keep in mind this classic quote from Napoleon Hills, Think and Grow Rich, “The starting point of all achievement is desire… Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat.” Create a Path. Even the best goal-setting system isnt enough. You need specific action steps to follow. When you create a blueprint for your objectives, you give yourself a path to run on. If you get sidetracked, as you undoubtedly will, its simple to pick up and restart where you left off. Link Your Activities to Your Goals. Identify your top priorities in every area of your life: career, family, health, friends etc. Then link all of your activities to your goals. Goal-directed behavior is what enables successful people to achieve their objectives in record time. Stop Multi-Tasking. As management guru Peter Drucker said, If there is one secret of effectiveness, it is concentration. Focus single-mindedly on one thing at a time. By simply doing this, you can reduce the amount of time you need to complete any task by 50-80 percent. Use Technology Efficiently. Technology is great when it enhances productivity, but it can also become a major distraction. Remember, cell phones, e-mail and the Internet, were designed to be used as tools. Dont let them become your master. Beware of the Open Door. Of course, you need to be accessible at work; but you also need to maintain control of your accessibility. An open door policy only works well if you set time limits and stick to them. Your time is your most valuable resource. If you allow others free use of it, youll pay a steep price in stress and lost productivity. Manage Information and Idea Overload. Every day youre bombarded with more information than you can possibly handle in a week. One key to managing it is to be very selective about what gets your attention now, and what you save for later. Link your reading, viewing and listening activities to your goals as much as possible. And always keep a notebook or voice recorder handy, so you can manage ideas and potentially profit from them later. 2007 Dr. Robert Karlsberg & Dr. Jane Adler Dr. Jane Adler and Dr. Robert Karlsberg are leading experts in leadership development and the psychology of business. Depression In Teenagers & Children

By Carolyn Magura DEPRESSION in Teenagers and Children A while ago I did a blog about Adult depression. While doing the research on Adult depression, I learned quite a bit of information about depression in general, in addition to what I already knew because I suffer from this condition myself. What I didn’t know, however, is just how prevelant this condition is in the population at large, and in children and teens in specific. One source said that depression is close to the top psychological condition in the western world (more about what this means in a later blog; it’ll take a whold blog to talk about what this means). This article will cover the following: teenager and children depression statistics; teenager and children - specific depression symptoms (for “general” symptoms, check out the Adult blog), and, what you, as the parent and/or gaurdian, can do if you recognize the symptoms in one of yours. (Remember, the following information comes from many Internet sources.) TEENAGER AND CHILDREN DEPRESSION STATISTICS As many as 8.3% of teenagers in the U.S. suffer from depression. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in teenagers. As many as one in every 33 children and approximately one in 8 adolescents may have depression. (Center for Mental Health Services, 1996; these data have increased over the past 9 years). Treatment of major depression is as effective for children as it is for adults. (Dr. Graham Emslie, American Medical Association, Archives of General Psychiatry, November 15, 1997). Twenty years ago depression in children was almost unknown. Now the fastest rate of increase in depression is among young people. (I don’t know about you, but this statistic scares me the most!) The statistics on teen depression are sobering. Studies indicate that one in five (1 in 5) children have some sort of mental, behavioral, or emotional problem, and that one in ten (1 in 10) may have a serious emotional problem. What is even more chilling is that of all these children and teens struggling with emotional and behavioral problems, a mere 30% receive any sort of intervention or treatment. The other 70% simply struggle through the pain of mental illness or emotional turmoil, doing their best to make it to adulthood. Many theorize that this is why the suicide rate in teens is so high. Suicide is the third (3rd) leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24. Even more troubling, it is the sixth (6th) leading cause of death among children ages 5-14. The consequences of untreated depression can be: increased incidence of depression in adulthood; involvement in the criminal justice system; or in some cases, suicide. WHAT ARE THE TEEN/CHILDREN DEPRESSION SYMPTOMS? As we see above, treatment (i.e., counseling, therapy, or even medical intervention, if needed) for depression is as effective for teens/children as it is for Adults. Let me state that again; research from a variety of sources indicates that appropriate treatment for depression in a teen and/or a child is as effective as it is for Adults. So, what, as a parent or gurdian, should we look for? What are the symptoms of real depression, and not just a “bad mood”? “Real Depression” - the type that needs immediate and appropriate attention - in teenagers and in children is defined as: when the feelings of depression persist and interfere with the teen’s/child’s ability to function in his/her normal daily activities. This doesn’t mean that one should ignore a teen’s/child’s bad mood if it lasts for a few days or a few weeks. What it does mean is that, at a minimum, you, the parent/guardian must know enough about your teen’s/child’s normal daily activities so that you can know when there are changes. OK, what covers “normal daily activities” for a teen/child? (And, in this, we are sticking to American generic teens/children, because that’s what I am most famaliar with. If anyone can add to this list, please do so.) As you read through this list, remember that your teen/child has to have “a siginficant” number of these symptoms; they have to be ongoing, out of character; and impair the teen’s/child’s normal daily activities (sound familiar?) 1) Snapping at people for no apparent reason - being irritable at everyone. 2) Physically or verbally aggressive at everyone. 3) Abandoning favorite hobbies or sports or other routine, daily activities. 4) Increased passive TV watching (where the teen/child has that “thousand yard stare” and is not interacting with the programs). 5) Increased risk-taking; e.g., dangerous driving; climbing too high in a tree and jumping, breaking something; other repeated unusually dangerous activities. 6) Misuse of drugs and alcohol. Particularly teens, who use drugs and alcohol to “escape”. (1) 7) Changes in school behaviors (including training courses and work settings) for teens; changes in interpersonal behaviors and activities in a pre-school setting (i.e., used to like to color and play with clay; now just sits in a corner, holding a stuffed toy and sucking a thumb). 8) Frequent absences from school; poorer grades than formerly attained; increase in skipping classes; etc. For a child, reversion in activities (i.e., used to color within the lines, now just scribbling on paper; intentionally breaking things, etc.) 9) Complains of being bored (teen); a child whose attention waivers when it didn’t before. A child who, during a group reading, who used to sit and listen, now gets up and wanders around. 10) Becomes disruptive in class (both teens and children). 11) Finds it harder to stay on task. Loses concentration easily; is mentally confused. Finds decisions difficult to make. In a child this might look like the following: unable to match blocks by color when s/he could before; unable to choose between playing ball and jumping rope when the child ALWAYS choose playing ball before. You can think of your own examples, I’m sure. 12) Cannot remember commitments - doesn’t keep appointments (teen). As a child, forgets to bring papers home when s/he ALWAYS used to do so; forgets home address/telephone number when s/he has known them for months/years; etc. 13) Has difficulty staying still or conversely, is lethargic (sluggish). This would apply to both a teen and a child. You can picture, in your mind, the teen or child in constant motion; twitching, shaking a foot, or both feet; handling things; etc. OR, the teen or child who sits or lays with that thousand yard stare again. AND, again, this is unusual behavior for your teen or child. 14) Changes in relationships with family and friends. Usually, this change manifests itself in hostility, or in passivity. Arguing when s/he didn’t before; or, using the “whatever” answer, when s/he used to talk to you. (Again, don’t single this one symptom out; it must be one of many symptoms that your teen or child has.) 15) Stops going out with friends; shows no interest in group outings. 16) Increase or decrease in sexual activity (hopefully, an OLDER TEEN). 17) May start associating with a different peer group (that “bad influence” group as a teen; the “rowdy” kids as a child). 18) Loses interest in activities which once were fun. 19) More conflicts with parents and siblings than usual. 20) Changes in eating and sleeping habits. 21) Expresses inappropriate guilt, feelings of not being good enough, worthlessness, failure. (I can see this in a teen; not sure how this would look in a child. If you can, please let us know.) 22) Expresses hopelessness and having nothing to look forward to. 23) Speaks in a monotonous or monosyllabic manner. 24) Has a preoccupation with self; is withdrawn. 25) Cries easily, looks sad, feels alone or isolated. 26) Has fears about having to be perfect. 27) Fearful of doing something bad. This, in a child, could manifest itself as bedwetting after YEARS of not bedwetting; fear of darkness or “things that go bump in the night” after YEARS of no fear, etc. 28) Incidents of self-injury. Ideas of killing self. (I have no idea of how this would look for a child, and hope never to have such an idea!) WHAT A PARENT/GUARDIAN CAN DO The two most important things a parent can do for your child/teen is to first, KNOW YOUR TEEN/CHILD’S ROUTINE, AND NORMAL DAILY ACTIVITIES so that you can identify any changes; and, LISTEN: 1) listen when your children talk; 2) listen to their music; 3) spend more time with them and be involved in their activities; 4) take them to movies and concerts, and discuss them afterward; 5) know their friends, and listen to them, as well; 6) do not lecture or offer unsolicited advice, or ultimatums; and, 7) do not try to talk them out of their feelings; instead, ask them if they can describe their feelings. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, learn the above symptoms and know your teen/child. Here are some more things that you, the parent or guardian can do. 8) If a child, go to their day care periodically, and lern their routine; ask the teachers to alert you if their routine changes. 9) If a teen, go to ALL of your teen’s teacher conferences to learn the patterns of the normal school day, and ask to be alerted immediately to changes. 10) For both teens and children, know their friends; see if your home can become the “gathering place”; get to know the parents of your child’s or teen’s friends and agree to let each other know if you see any changes in behavior. 11) In all cases, keep a diary of any changes that you see, so that you will be able to discuss the situation with great clarity and specificity with professionals, should the need arise. 12) Respond with love, kindness, and support if you think that your child/teen is experiencing problems that can lead to depression. 13) Let your child or teen know that you are there, whenever she or he needs you, and do so often and in age-specific (as Dr. Phil would say) ways. 14) Keep trying, but gently, if your teen shuts you out (depressed teenagers do not want to feel patronized or crowded). 15) Do not criticize or pass judgment, once the child or teen begins to talk (the important thing is that he or she is talking and communicating feelings). REMEMBER, NEVER CRITICIZE FEELINGS; everyone has the right to their feelings, even if you think that they are “wrong”. Let them be voiced; if inapproptiate, seek professional assistance. 16) Encourage activity and praise efforts. 17) Seek help from a doctor or mental health professional, if the teen’s or child’s depressed feeling doesn’t pass with time (be prepared to list behaviors, note how long and how often they have been occurring, and how severe they seem - hence, the diary mentioned above). 18) Do not wait and hope that symptoms will go away on their own. Better to seek assistance and be told that your teen/child is fine than to let your teen/child become one of the 70% who never receive help. 19) When depression is severe if teens or children are thinking about hurting themselves or about suicide seek professional help as soon as possible. 20) Parents of depressed adolescents may themselves need support. Seek out groups of parents who have experience with teen depression Footnote (1): What some of my friends and I did with alcohol when we had teenagers; we kept a “mark” (usually hidden so the teens couldn’t see it on the bottle) that changed each time we used the bottle. In this way, we could know immediately if the teens were drinking, and could deal with the situation. Valentine’s Day Cards: Finding The Perfect One

By Gabriel J. Adams Finding the perfect Valentines Day card can take time. There are plenty to choose from, but for that special someone you want the card to be perfect from the cover to the writing style to what the words have to say. The isles of Valentines Day cards can get crowded in the days leading up to Valentines Day, so try to search for your card early. This will give you plenty of time to read through them without fighting the crowd. Valentines Day cards come in many colors and sizes. I have seen some very small ones that fit into a wallet. These are a great way to surprise the man in your life. Slip one into his wallet and when he opens it on Valentines Day, he will find it waiting for him. Most are the standard card size. There are some that are so huge, you have to open them on a table top! The perfect Valentines Day card is going to depend on where you are in a relationship. You definitely dont want one that professes undying love for someone you have only dated a few times. However, you dont want to sell a long term relationship short by giving a casual Valentines Day card. Both men and women love getting a quality card that is from the heart. If you want to be more original, create your own Valentines Day card. There are several online websites that allow you to choose the cover and choose the writing script. You can then choose from one of their verses for the inside or write your own. This is a wonderful way to create the perfect Valentines Day card that says exactly what you want. Make sure you order your card early. This ensures it will arrive in time as well as let you review it for errors prior to the arrival of Valentines Day. You can also create your own at home with construction paper, glitter, and any other craft supplies you want to use. Valentines Day cards are often treasured items by the recipient as they are a thoughtful gesture of love that comes from the heart. Regardless what type of Valentines Day card you choose to give, take the time to make sure it is an honest reflection of your true feelings.
