Arsonists for Christs UNITE!

By Michael Tummillo We all know what an arsonist is. It’s a person who goes around STARTING fires. In the world of the everyday mundane activities of life, quite often we hear the phrase, “I’ve got too many fires to put out!” Certainly, we are each presented with obstacles as occasionally we find ourselves blind-sided by some unexpected trial that throws us for a loop. Whether it’s a car crash on the way to work or a computer crash once we get there, the diagnoses of a life-ending disease or a project-ending computer virus, we are constantly beset upon by things that will either make us or break us, bind us together or tear us apart. It’s been said that there are THREE kinds of people in this world: Those who MAKE things happen, those who WATCH things happen and then there are those who ask “What happened?” Where are those “Firestarters” among us who will lift their heads from among the ranks and find a better way to do what’s always been done? Where are the Christians on the roster who recognize the need to be a “thermostat” - changing the environment - rather than another one of the many “thermometers” - responding to the temperature - in the crowd? Where are those “Bold as a Lion” Believers who dare to head west when all others are headed east? There are Pioneers and there are Settlers. It’s your choice. When I was diagnosed with a spinal disease at age 28, I’ll admit that there were times when, just as pitiful Job did, I despaired of life itself. While I was at my sickest, even more personal tragedy came my way. After I renewed my mind by radically changing my personal input, I began to see the opportunities God was placing in front of me each and every day. Now, I’m totally healed and motivated in drastically new directions with my life than I ever imagined. Where I once saw crowds of people gathering for an event, suddenly I saw opportunities to share my faith with one or two. These days, I’m reaching tens of thousands WEEKLY by email, phone and in-person. When we are faithful with the small stuff, God gives us MORE stuff. Where I once saw my own personal tragedies, I began to see opportunities to grow, to better relate to the masses and embrace compassion for those who are hurting. I could get bitter or get BETTER! So, how are things in YOUR world? How are things at work? In your relationships? On a deeply personal level? Are you reacting to them or ACTING as Jesus would act? EACH of us is one radical decision AWAY from drastically changing our world - and subsequently, the world of others. So, go start a fire today. Jesus started His ministry with the word, “REPENT!” In the original language, He was literally saying, “Change your minds!” Like the jar full of fleas who will only jump as high as the lid will allow, they’ll continue to only jump that same height even AFTER the lid is removed. Change your mind! Jump HIGHER! If it’s broken, fix it! but it all starts upon that famous battlefield, the human mind. It’s been said that the largest nation on earth is the Imagi-NATION. In my opinion, far too many Christians live there, imagining how bad things are, how they will never improve, how this must be “it” for them…thoughts that simply can NOT be backed up by Scripture. We are encouraged to “be transformed by the RENEWING of our minds.” Hey! There’s a GREAT place to start…renewing our minds so that we can CHANGE our minds about how we’re going to look at life. Sure, bad things will continue happening to good people. Jesus taught us that “It rains upon the just and the unjust.” The difference will always remain in how YOU choose to handle the tough stuff. Three simple steps to becoming an Arsonist for Christ: STEP 1: Change your input..garbage in, garbage out. STEP 2: Change your friends…are you going to flock with the turkeys or soar with the eagles? STEP 3: Change your habits…if you want something you don’t have, do something you’re NOT currently doing. A bible study perhaps? STEP 4: Make something happen. The worst you can do is fail. Dust yourself off and try something else. Quitters never win and winners never quit. ABOUT THE AUTHOR His mission is to bring Discipleship and Encouragement to the Body of Christ. Bible Prophecy States EU to Form Core Group

By David Ben-Ariel EU industry commissioner Gunter Verheugen, when asked by the German daily Die Welt how he sees the European Union in 20 years’ time, responded: “I believe we will have a political union, but maybe not with all states that now form part of the EU.” “Certain European states will agree to have common competencies in foreign, economic and financial policy as well as in judicial policy.” The European Observer reported “The remarks point to the possible creation of a ‘core’ Europe of EU states further integrating policies, with other states opting out. This vision emerged in the 1990s in German conservative political circles, and has since won supporters mainly in France and Belgium…”. Actually, the vision was foreseen thousands of years ago. The Prophet Daniel foresaw the present European Union will forge ahead into the final revival of the unholy Roman Empire that will again stomp the earth; it will consist of TEN NATIONS of Europe that will serve as the engine of the “New Europe,” with the driving force behind it later revealed as GERMANY and the VATICAN. Even these top ten will not have the right chemistry to maintain a long-lasting relationship. Such a marriage of convenience will only last 3 1/2 years. The Book of Revelation confirms this vision by offering further details, showing how ten leaders will surrender their sovereignty to ONE MAN who will head Europe; how the ten kings will have been under very heavy religious influence to lend their support to such a man; and 2 Thessalonians warns Europe’s leading man will fall prey to seductive powers to proclaim himself a divine emperor! Europe’s (German?) wannabe divine emperor will mislead the nations to fight against the return and reign of the real Jesus from Heaven who will appear in full view of all mankind — in the sky — before touching down upon the Mount of Olives. We are getting very close to the fulfillment of these prophecies! Daniel 2:41-45 41 Just as you saw that the feet and [ten] toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay. 44 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. 45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human handsa rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. “The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and the interpretation is trustworthy.” Daniel 7:23-27 23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. 24 The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to change the set times and the laws. The saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a time. [3 1/2 years] 26 ” ‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever. 27 Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be handed over to the saints, the people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.’ Daniel 11:36 36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been determined must take place. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 4He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God. Atkins Diet — The Final Verdict

By Michael Smith, MD Supporters of the Atkins Diet claim that a low carbohydrate diet is a safe and effective method for losing weight. This article evaluates the low carbohydrate diet and specifically the claims made about ketosis. The Low Carb-Ketosis Link By severely limiting carbohydrates in your diet, the main energy source used by your body, glucose, drops to low levels. In return, insulin levels also drop. With low glucose and low insulin levels, the body turns to alternative sources of energy. Because of a significant change in your body’s chemistry when on the Atkins Diet, certain metabolic pathways are turned “on” that are normally not “on” or run at very low levels. One such pathway involves the breakdown of fat, called Beta-Oxidation of Fats. Now, normally fats are broken down to produce energy when your body senses a need. But in the context of a low Carb diet, the normal breakdown pathway of fats is altered and an alternative pathway kicks in. This alternative pathway produces what are called ketone bodies. Ketosis is the term used to describe when ketone bodies are circulating in your bloodstream. The ketone bodies can be used as alternative sources of energy by, most importantly, your brain. In case you might be curious, the three ketone bodies produced by this alternative pathway for breaking down fat are acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone. These ketone bodies are formed in your liver and then are transported to other tissues, mainly the brain. In your brain, they are converted back to a form that can provide direct energy during times of starvation. Here is the whole process… Atkins Diet lowers glucose and insulin (the body’s main energy source) Alternative pathways are turned “on” to provide energy One alternative pathway breaks down fat and produces ketone bodies Ketone bodies represent the state called ketosis The brain uses ketone bodies as an alternative source of energy So, the Atkins Diet (and any low Carb diet) produces a low energy state (low glucose) that causes the breakdown fat using an alternative pathway that leads to the development of ketosis. So far it sounds pretty good. By limiting Carbs in your diet, you can essentially force your body into breaking down stored fat, the very thing you need to get rid of to lose weight. But there are problems… Atkins Diet and Toxicity Ketone bodies are toxic. Many supporters of low Carb diets claim that ketosis is safe. They state that they are natural byproducts of fat breakdown and even babies have high levels of circulating ketone bodies. First, they are not natural by-products of fat metabolism. The normal beta-oxidation of fats does produce ketone bodies but these are incorporated into the normal cycle of energy production, called the Krebs cycle. When ketone bodies are circulating in your bloodstream, it signals an abnormal physiologic state, called starvation. They are not incorporated into the normal energy cycle, the Krebs cycle, and spill into the bloodstream. Just because your body has the ability to transport ketone bodies to certain tissues and then use them for energy, does not make it a normal process. It is an alternative pathway that turns “on” only when your body is faced with depleted levels of the main energy source, glucose. Secondly, babies are not small adults. A baby’s liver and brain tissue are made up of different chemicals and pathways, specifically geared to handle the high fat diet coming from mother’s milk. These pathways change as a baby grows and starts to eat other foods. Eventually, the normal adult pathways are set up and the infantile chemistry used as evidence to support the safety of ketosis, stop working. But this is not even related to the fact that ketone bodies are toxic. In medicine, the three ketone bodies mentioned above are classified as toxic acidic chemicals. At high levels, they can cause your blood to become too acidic, a disease state called ketoacidosis. Granted, this is rare because most of the ketone bodies will be used by the brain as an energy source. Ketoacidosis is usually seen in type 1 diabetics. It is a medical emergency. So, is ketosis dangerous to your body? Yes and no. Yes, ketosis represents a state of starvation. Losing weight when the body thinks you’re starving is the best way to guarantee weight regain. The weight will come back and come back as fat. No, ketosis will not cause ketoacidosis in non-diabetics. And as long as you have a large storage of fat, your brain will not starve for energy. The Final Verdict As an alternative physiologic state, ketosis is not dangerous, assuming the levels of ketone bodies do not increase to acidic levels. As a diet plan, ketogenic diets are not recommended because of the state of starvation they create. Your metabolism will eventually slow down setting you up for weight regain in the near the future. Ketogenic diets, like the Atkins Diet, may also be dangerous not because they cause ketosis, but because they promote high protein and fat intake. High protein diets, unless you’re body building, increases urea production and can damage the kidneys. Supporters claim that this just doesn’t happen, reporting that no kidney damage has occurred to the millions of dieters on Atkins Diet or other ketogenic diets. However, it is well known that microscopic damage can occur to the kidneys effecting their ability to filter the blood. But clinical signs of this damage may take several years to manifest. Chronic renal insufficiency is a concern for ketogenic dieters, which may cause problems in the years to come. Conclusion Atkins Diet and other ketogenic diets (low Carb) can be safe and effective in causing weight loss. However, I recommend keeping ketosis to a minimum and keep your carbohydrate intake above 50 grams a day. Don’t follow the suggestions for reaching an “induction” phase. It’s not necessary to turn “on” the alternative pathways described above and burn fat. Remember, healthy weight loss is to burn fat and fat only. But it also involves keeping your rate of weight loss around 2-3 pounds/week. The induction phase promoted by the Atkins Diet can result in a rate of weight loss far greater than 2-3 pounds/week. It may sound good to you now, but how does gaining it all back as fat sound? Because that will happen if you lose weight too fast. Taxes And Divorce

By Antonio Fricano The truth is, most family law lawyers don’t have a firm grasp on the tax consequences of divorce. One reason we went to law school instead of to medical school was because we didn’t want to take the extra math classes. Instead, hoping to leverage our talents for writing, negotiating and public speaking we decided to enter into one of the most litigation intensive specialties within the law. Still, these lawyers can provide effective representation for their clients. The reason is that most opposing attorneys are of the same mindset. This mindset is; “I am a family law attorney and if my client needs tax advice they should seek the advice of a tax professional.” This is good advice, but seldom clients actually abide by it. The tax consequences of a divorce can have a tremendous impact on the actual (as opposed to stated) value each side receives in a property division or support order. This leaves those lawyers with an understanding of tax law in a superior bargaining position. The following article will discuss a couple areas where family law and tax law intersect. Support Orders The bargaining chips here are the exemptions and filing status. Exemptions are a tax deduction so they are a benefit for the spouse receiving them. Two ground rules to keep in mind is that a custody split should never be 50/50, (because neither party will get the exemption) and the court can’t order parties to take a particular filing status. The advantages of taking certain tax positions can be analyzed by the DissoMaster software. Once the exact benefits to both sides are calculated, the negotiating begins. Generally, the tax deductions should be negotiated towards allocating them to the higher earning spouse. In that way both spouses collectively pay fewer taxes. Another result is that the higher wage earning spouse has a higher net income which will result in a larger order of support to the receiving spouse. All of this is, of course, is negotiable and can even be conditioned on certain events. For example, an agreement might have a provision that Wife sign the IRS form allocating the exemption to husband by January 15th each year, provided that she receive increased spousal support of a certain amount. These tax aspects can have a major impact on a client’s future finances and should be a point of negotiation. Property Division This is an area where a basic understanding of tax law is crucial to obtaining a fair result for the client. Family law courts have two fundamental rules here: 1)The court does not take tax consequences into account when determining value a.Example: If you are awarded the family residence and plan on selling it after the divorce, the court will not reduce the value it puts on the house just because you will have to pay taxes on the gain from the residence 2)Pursuant to IRC 1041, property transfers subject to a divorce are not taxed a.Example: If you sell your interest in the family home to your spouse, you will not be taxed California community property law states that each spouse shall get an equal share of the community property. This can be more complex than it seems. As an example, let’s say that we are awarding stock to Wife with a fair market value of $200,000 and we are awarding husband cash from the community bank account equaling $200,000. While this might seem equal, it probably is not. The stocks are subject to taxes, either a loss or a gain. If Wife has to pay taxes on $100,000 of the stocks when she sells them, she has gotten the short end of the stick. Calculating Loss or Gain The loss or gain for tax purposes on any property is equal to the selling price minus the basis. Basis is the purchase price of the asset, plus improvements, plus fix up costs, minus depreciation and deferrals. Obviously it can get complicated trying to figure out all these factors, so attorneys need their clients to take an active role in providing this information. The situation gets even more complex when dealing with pensions. Pensions have early withdrawal penalties and other serious tax implications for divisions. Also, a loss or gain may be avoided entirely with some estate planning. For example; if the spouse was awarded the residence and lived in the residence until his or her death, then the basis for whomever he or she willed it to, would be the fair market value at the time of the transfer. Solutions How can you split everything equally when you are comparing apples and oranges? One way would be to take the King Solomon approach and divide everything in half, giving each side half an orange and half an apple. Sell the house and divide the proceeds. Each spouse takes half the stocks. If the pension or IRAs are unequal, roll some over from wife’s IRA to husband’s IRA or vice versa to make them of equal value. However, the best course of action for clients is to hire an attorney that has a basic understanding of the tax implications of divorce. Clients can test prospective attorneys in this regard with a few preliminary questions during the initial consultation. An attorney with this basic understanding can save clients lots of headaches down the road. Antonio J. Friacno c/o Law Offices of Donald P. Key Stages in a Relationship - Stage 1

By Elaine Sihera The first obvious stage in any relationship is selection, the beginning of the honeymoon phase. This is also the most important because without the expectation and actual success in selecting the right partner, nothing else will happen: no dialogue, no love, no marriage, no sex, no continuation of the species! This is the time when expectation is high on one hand but carefully muted to some degree, often deliberately suppressed to prevent any personal disappointment. Selection involves a hunt of some duration, ending with the catch or prize the potential partner. The only goal at this stage is to attract someone to whom the person is appealing in return. Everything hinges on this ultimate objective and, to prevent any disaster, there is a high level of teasing, pretending and game playing. The guy might pretend he is merely seeking a friend, no commitment, of course, while the girl might pretend he is no one special, perhaps playing hard to get in the process. Thus, reading the signals becomes crucial at this time in case we overreact, but they are often missed through inexperience, fear of not making an impression, offending the other, or through too much excitement and bravado. Sometimes they are also misinterpreted through a difference in culture, age or gender perception or the wish to appear nice and accommodating The emphasis here is on getting someone healthy, worthy, almost a mirror image of the hunter in culture, race and values. Someone almost flawless in every respect in order to continue the species in the most effective form, and in the quickest possible time. Efforts are then made to catch the attention of someone special, primarily to make a connection, nothing more. In fact, if we still have some unresolved problems with a parent, this is the time we may unconsciously choose someone who is similar to, or the opposite of, him or her. We may even find a partner attractive because she has traits we feel we lack or we find unacceptable in ourselves. Attracting Attention For example, a woman who is too serious may like a man who is fun-loving and carefree. But, later down the line, too much extroversion, especially at the wrong moments, might jar on the more reserved party. Initially the differences in personality will seem very appealing, but they are more likely to irritate after a while, especially if they are the result of low self-esteem, and will inevitably take their toll on the stronger party. The selection stage is characterised by an elaborate ritual of drawing attention to ones self at every opportunity and seeking interest from the other party often with unrealistic expectations to match. The main aim at this crucial time is to impress others and to stir a positive reaction. Many people go to lengths to find a reciprocal mate, especially with regard to physical attraction. They try to look their best, preening themselves like peacocks, and often in the latest fashions, to emphasise their individuality and style. They try to say the right things at all times and to behave according to the perceived expectations of the intended one perceptions which are likely to be based upon past experience. That is why many suitors make the mistake of using the expectations of former partners, or general stereotypes, to judge new ones. Bad move, in fact, because everyone likes to be treated individually. Each persons expectation will also be age-related, culturally referenced, value driven and based upon her/his future objectives. In selecting a potential mate men invariably focus on the physical: someone beautiful, stunning, gorgeous, a real babe, translated as one who looks good and carries the right height, weight, hair and boobs! They also loathe any form of rejection, taking offence at the slightest lack of interest, but are usually quickest to reject the women they do not deem to be suitable often without a second thought. For women it is a more emotional requirement, though well-developed bulges in the right places, like biceps and triceps, will not be overlooked! Attributes women value in men are passion, love, a caring nature and loyalty. If they are older, at least some hair and the suitors own teeth would not go amiss! Some money would be welcome too, while a nice bum would be a great bonus. This is the time when we would almost go through hoops to be noticed, which also makes us ultra-sensitive to the mildest form of rejection. Desperation Creeping In Trouble arises when one party is already further down the attraction line such as being at the third stage of commitment which is too obvious too early, which tends to frighten off the other party. Connection then hangs in the balance while other factors are used to judge the possibility of further progress, like the value of the prize (whether he/she is ‘worth it’), and the personal state of readiness to move more rapidly beyond the selection stage). Factors like these influence the decision whether to proceed or not with the chosen one. As this 39-year-old male says about his method of selecting: I prefer women under 35 or over 45. The in-betweens are best avoided. Women between those ages have moved into those years where they feel the overwhelming urge to ’settle down’ and have children. Desperation creeps in then, and desperation is never sexy.” When that crucial connection is made, it is time to move on to the next stage. When my ex-husband first met me he earned only 8 per week a good wage then for a junior person in the Forces but, as he was always trying to impress me, he often took me to have an expensive meal (about 1.50 then!) followed by the cinema or pub. After these outings, and some savings in his post office book, there could not have been much left to last him through the week! One night he missed the only bus and walked 16 miles from his Royal AirForce base to the nurses home just to see me. I was impressed! How To Talk with your Physician about Supporting your Disability Claim

By Scott E. Davis Well, it happened again this week. What am I referring to? The all too familiar story of a treating physician who does not support a patients claim for disability benefits. This usually comes as a complete shock to the patient who thought the physician was in their corner (In this article I use physician interchangeably to mean medical physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists or podiatrists). I am aware of this problem because I often talk with treating physicians about a clients disability claim. The client has told me they are certain the physician supports their claim. I am always surprised when the physician does not support the claim or does not “want to be involved in the claim.” To be sure, the physicians response of “not wanting to be involved” is the same as not supporting your claim. In this article I will discuss why is it critical to have the support of your treating physicians and hopefully how to obtain it. Tip #1 The Support of a Treating Physician is Often Critical to Claim Approval In a social security disability (SSA) claim, federal law gives the greatest weight to the opinions of treating physicians. If SSA has your physicians opinion that you are unable to work, you should have a strong case. If you do not have your physicians support, or they are silent on the issue of your disability, your claim will likely be compromised. This is not to say cannot win your case, but the mountain you must climb will be steeper without a physicians support. The fact that SSA gives the greatest weight to your treating physicians opinion is critical because one of SSAs physicians (who may have only reviewed your records) will usually conclude that you are able to work. If confronted with differing opinions, federal law requires SSA or a judge to give greater weight to your physicians opinion because they know your medical condition best. Thus, if your physician has told SSA you are unable to work, SSA should use that opinion and approve your claim. If your physician does not want to be involved in your disability case, or will not complete a form, this is the same as not supporting your claim. Why? Because you can bet SSA has an opinion in your file from its own physician that you can work. Without your physicians opinion, SSA will use its own physicians opinion (even if they have never seen you!) to deny your claim. Thus, if your physician has told you he/she does not support your claim, or does complete disability forms, you have a real problem that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Tip #2 When to Talk with Your Physician About Supporting Your Disability Claim Remember the old adage, Keep it Simple Stupid! Let this adage guide your conversation with your physician. First, you should talk with them about supporting your claim only after you have been evaluated by them 3 or 4 times, or after you feel they know your condition well. Never talk with a physician about your claim after the first or even second visit. Why? Your first priority in the relationship should be for treatment that allows you to return to work. The physician will be very reluctant to support your disability claim if they believe you are motivated by disability benefits rather than getting better. The physician will be more willing to support your claim after they have treated you for a period of time without meaningful results. Tip #3 How to Talk with Your Physician About Supporting Your Disability Claim With all due respect to the medical community, many physicians do not know how SSA defines disability. The problem is most physicians think they know who is and is not disabled. I know this to be true because I have personally spoken with hundreds of physicians whose definition of disability was completely different than SSAs. In almost every case, the physicians definition of disability is much stricter and harder to meet than SSAs definition! Invariably, the treating physician concludes the patient is not disabled using their definition and will not support the case. However, after I explain SSAs definition, the physician agrees the patient is disabled and unable to work! The key to obtaining your physicians support is how you frame SSAs definition of disability. Tip# 4 Discussing SSAs Definition of Disability with your Physician To obtain the support of your physician, I believe the following is an effective approach. First, never tell your physician you are “disabled” or have a “permanent disability.” Why? Because those expressions are terms of art our society uses but are totally irrelevant to a social security disability claim. Remember, your physician will usually save those labels for only their most seriously ill patients. You probably dont “look” like one of those patients. Instead, ask the following questions. First, tell them you have filed a claim for disability benefits because you are “unable to sustain full time work.” Ask your physician if they also believe you are “unable to sustain full time work at the present time.” Notice that I did not use the words “disabled” or “permanent” in either question. If your physician agrees with you then ask for their support for the next 18 to 24 months. Why such a short time? For one, this will get you past SSAs requirement that you be unable to work (or you are expected to be unable to work) for at least 12 months. Second, most physicians believe disability is a “permanent” condition and once your claim is approved, you will never return to work. Countless physicians have told me they dont want to be put in the position of saying a patient is permanently disabled. You would not want to be put in that position either. Sodont put them in that position. However, almost all physicians will agree that a patient is unable to work for a period of time. Your physician will feel more comfortable supporting your disability claim when they know it is for a limited period of time and that you want to return to work after a period of recuperation If after 18 to 24 months you are not able to return to work, then address the issue again with your physician. If your physician does support your claim, ask them to please write into the medical record that you are unable to work and to document the reasons why. Conclusion If you approach your physician in the manner discussed in this article I can assure you that you will have more success. I know this to be true because I use it every day when I talk with a physician about supporting a clients disability claim. Scott E. Davis is a social security and long-term disability insurance attorney in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Davis represents clients throughout the United States. Although Mr. Davis has experience representing clients with a broad spectrum of physical and/or psychological disorders, the majority of his Nevada disability practice is devoted to representing individuals with chronic pain and chronic fatigue disorders. Alliance Turning Towards the Financial Dark Side

By Richard Greenlane Following in the footsteps of many of its high street competitors, Alliance and Leicester has announced that it will no longer accept new customers onto its Online Saver and Direct ISA accounts. The interest rate for the Online Savers account is also being cut from 5.35% to a straight 5%. Richard Brown of the financial comparison website Moneynet believes that Alliance and Leicester (A&L), in common with its high street competitors, has seen its costs rise as a result of recent rule changes covering things like the way mortgages and general insurance are policed. He added, Unfortunately its the consumer who shoulders much of this additional burden It seems to many of their loyal customers that A&L is indeed determined to make their customers pay in an effort to purge costs and boost their profits. These cuts are only the latest of a series of changes that A&L have made during recent months. First to go was the cashback scheme on their Moneyback credit card. The Moneyfacts financial data website pointed out in February, that A&L had increased the APR on their credit cards for all purchases up to 16.9%; as well as increasing penalty fees, and introducing punitive new clauses to current accounts. Other charges have been introduced to their mortgage products, balance transfer fees on credit cards, reductions in childrens savings accounts, whilst The Guardian has revealed some suspect changes that have been implemented to their systems to increase the number of customers who breach their overdraft agreements, triggering penalty charges. A&L has said that there is no hidden agenda, and that it still leads the way compared with its banking rivals. A&L however, are not the only financial group to be feeling the pinch. Barclays, HBOS and Royal Bank of Scotland have all warned about credit arrears. An announcement concerning job losses at Scottish Widows, came alongside admissions from their owners LLOYDS TSB that there was, An increase in the number of customers experiencing repayment difficulties with their credit card debts and unsecured personal loans. According to Lloyds’ Chief Executive, Eric Daniels, we are currently experiencing, “a slowing consumer environment”. Recent announcements by the Treasury delivered the worst monthly public borrowing figures since records began in 1993, re-igniting fears over a possible rise in taxes. Consumers are reducing the amount they borrow on credit cards and analysts predict mortgage lending in the UK will plummet by 10 per cent over the next three years, as the out of control growth in house prices finally stalls. Independent market analyst Datamonitor claims, lenders who have been enjoying a boom in recent years, will struggle to maintain the momentum and be forced to work harder to secure market share. Investor Connections, a group of independent financial advisers, has called for an accurate assessment of the UK’s current economic position, after statistics showed the three main asset classes, shares, bonds and property are all experiencing downward trends. This downturn should spell good news for borrowers and homeowners, as the mortgage and credit industries fight for customers and sharpen up on their competitiveness; however the evidence of Lloyds TSBs actions seems to belie this. With HBOS forced to criticise the other credit card companies for failing to provide customers with adequate product information, despite repeated requests to do so from consumer lobby groups and watchdogs on the Treasury Select Committee, it looks like the majority of finance companies are currently out to protect themselves and their share-holders, with little regard for their customers. At a time when UK consumers are proportionately saving less than half of what they were 25 years ago, you might be forgiven for thinking that competition in the banking world would be becoming increasingly cut-throat in order to gain customers business, but it seems that the big institutions are instead looking to go down the route of cost reduction to protect their profits. There are savings are out there to be made, but they are savings in costs to be made by the finance companies, at the expense of the consumer, rather than beneficial savings for the customer. Relationships: Minding Your Manners

By Michelle Vasquez Where have all the manners gone? Im amazed at how being polite seems to be a vanishing art. Recently, Ive seen articles online about how Americans are less well-mannered than we used to be. Taken as a whole, if Americans are less polite, this is affecting every area of society. Where I see it doing the most damage is in relationships. When we first meet a potential mate, we put on our dating face. We show our best side and we mind our manners. After all, we want to make a good impression on the person we are interested in. We want our date to think well of us. As we get to know each other, we begin to get comfortable. Sometimes too comfortable. We begin to let it all hang out. We start showing our sloppy habits or even begin acting in a way that could be obnoxious. We begin to expect our chosen one to accept us as we are. If we develop a committed relationship, we may even stop minding our manners at all, then blame our partners when they call us on the carpet, saying, You knew I was this way when you met me. When people choose to marry, they say they will cherish each other. They promise to love and respect each other. They agree to hold their partnership as valuable. Yet, soon after (or maybe even before they marry) they begin to treat their partners with contempt, disrespect, even with cruelty. Sometimes they even treat strangers better than the one they chose to love. Strange What happened here? Is this a foregone conclusion? Is that just the way it is? Not necessarily, but it can be. Its understandable that we relax when we become comfortable with another person. It doesnt mean we have to relax our manners. I dont mean being stiff and formal with our chosen partner. But its important to keep up the good habits that we used to win our partner. Nothing is just the way it is that you didnt choose to make that way. To say, Thats just the way I am is the same as admitting that you refuse to accept responsibility for your behavior. When you treat your partner with contempt, you are acting contemptibly. When you disrespect your partner, you are disrespecting yourself. Think about the way you acted when you were first getting to know the person you are with. How did you act then? What things did you do to endear yourself to that person? How did you talk to him/her? What have you stopped doing that was helpful? What can you start doing again that will bring back the respect to your relationship? Remember, you have the power to choose more helpful behaviors. When your elders told you to mind your Ps and Qs, maybe they knew what they were talking about! Mary Magdalene-A Faithful Disciple of Jesus Christ

By Alan D Campbell Primary Witness of the Resurrection Mary Magdalene as one of the leading women who followed Jesus Christ. She witnessed some of the most important events in all of recorded historythe death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. She was such an important witness of these historical events that each of the four gospels mentions her. She was a wealthy woman who had served Jesus Christ during his ministry and given him financial support. The four gospels were written from four different perspectives over a period of 30 to 40 years. The fact that each gospel names her shows that she was well known as the primary witness to the resurrection. The other disciples, except John, had forsaken Jesus Christ and fled from his crucifixion and burial. However, Mary Magdalene remained close to him, and she was the first person to see Jesus Christ freed from the chains of death. Seven Demons Why was Mary Magdalene such a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ? Well one reason is that she was very thankful because Jesus Christ had cast seven demons out of her as recorded in Luke 8:1-2. “1And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, 2And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,” (KJV) Mary was not the only woman who followed Jesus Christ or whom he had healed of diseases of mind and body. Yet, Luke specifically mentions her because Christ had cast seven demons out of her. Jesus Christ had set her free from the bondage of the demonic world. Prostitute Allegation Mary Magdalene has often been misunderstood and has been accused of being a prostitute. However, the Bible nowhere identifies her as a prostitute. Why then do many people think that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute? Luke records an incident in which a woman who was a public sinner washed the feet of Jesus Christ with her tears. Some people think that Mary Magdalene was this woman. This incident is recorded in Luke 7:36-39: “36And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat. 37And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 38And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 39Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.” (KJV) However, scholars think Mary Magdalene is likely not the same woman called a sinner in Like 7:39 because Luke does not provide the name of the woman in Luke 7, but he specifically names Mary Magdalene in Luke 8:1-3. Allegation that She Was Married to Jesus Christ Some books such as Holy Blood, Holy Grail and the The Da Vinci Code allege that Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalene. One of the arguments for Mary Magdalene being married to Jesus Christ is that one of the Gnostic texts states that Jesus Christ kissed Mary. However, greeting one another with a holy kiss was common in that time even as the apostle Paul commanded in Romans 16:16 and in three other places in his epistles. Gnostic writings were never accepted as a part of the canon of scripture. Even the Gnostic texts nowhere state that Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalene or any other woman. Some people argue that Jesus Christ had to have been married because the disciples sometimes called him rabbi (Mark 11:21), and a rabbi was usually married. They called him rabbi or master as a title of respect. The word for rabbi or master in Mark 11:21 can mean my great one or my honorable sir. However, Jesus Christ was technically not a Jewish rabbi and he nowhere stated that he was a rabbi. The disciples sometimes called him a rabbi because he was their teacher, but Jesus Christ did not hold the official Jewish title of rabbi. According to Smiths Bible Dictionary, there were various forms of the title rabbi with different levels of honor. The lowest level was rab, which meant master. The next level was rabbi, which meant my master; next came rabban, which meant our master; and the highest level was Rabboni, which meant my great master. In Mark 11:28, the Jews asked him by what authority he did certain things because they knew that he did not hold any kind of formal Jewish position of authority. There is simply no hard evidence that Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalene or any other woman. The vast majority of scholars, whether they are liberal or conservative, agree that Jesus Christ was not married. At the Crucifixion and Burial Mary Magdalene was present at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as recorded in Matthew 27:55-56. “55And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: 56Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.” (KJV) While other disciples had forsaken Jesus Christ at his crucifixion, Mary Magdalene and many women showed great courage in being at the crucifixion. Women value relationships very highly. Mary Magdalene valued her relationship as a disciple of Jesus Christ. She was determined to stand by him until the very end. She remembered the healing that he had given her when he cast the seven demons out of her. He had given her a new life, and she would stand by him even in his death. Mary Magdalene was also present at the burial of Jesus Christ as recorded in Matthew 27:59-61. “59And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. 61And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.” (KJV) Yes, Mary Magdalene was also present at the burial of Christ. As the First Day of Unleavened Bread drew near, Mary Magdalene was there to witness the burial of her master and lord. She would later return to the tomb to anoint his body with spices, but she would not find Jesus Christ there. Witness to the Resurrection The Apostle John records how Mary Magdalene was a witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ in John 20:1-2. “1The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. 2Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the LORD out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.” (KJV) Mary was disturbed. If Jesus Christ were not alive, she wanted to still touch his body and anoint it with spices. She did not want to let go of her master to whom she was so devoted. She persuaded Peter and John to go to the tomb. They ran to it and looked inside. Then the disciples went home, but Mary Magdalene did not go home. Just as she had remained close to Jesus Christ at his crucifixion and burial, she would remain close to his empty tomb until she saw two angels inside it. The Apostle John goes on to describe the conversation that Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ had after his resurrection in John 20:13-17: “13And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know not where they have laid him. 14And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. 16Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. 17Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” (KJV) The Greek work for touch in verse 17 is Haptomai. It means to cling to. Jesus Christ told Mary Magdalene not to cling to him because his mission was not over until he had ascended to the Father. Jesus Christ gave Mary Magdalene the mission of informing the disciples that he had risen from the dead and would ascend to his Father. An apostle is one who is sent (Acts 1:21-22). Jesus Christ sent Mary Magdalene to tell his disciples, who would become apostles, that he was alive. For this reason, some early writings refer to Mary Magdalene as the apostle to the apostles. However, she had no authority as an apostle in any official capacity. She was not one of the 12. However, she was honored for her example and devotion. The fact that Jesus Christ first appeared to a woman and made her a witness of his resurrection is one of the strongest proofs of the truth or historicity of the resurrection account. Jewish law did not recognize a womans testimony. According to Mark 16:10-11, when Mary Magdalene told the disciples that she had seen Jesus Christ alive, they did not believe her. However, women were important to Jesus Christ. He appreciated their devotion, especially the devotion of Mary Magdalene. He valued the opinions and the testimony of a woman. If the account of Jesus Christs resurrection were a mere fable, Mary Magdalene would never have been listed as its first witness. Conclusion Mary Magdalene was a wealthy woman; she was a financial success. However, she did not achieve spiritual success until later. Seven demons had possessed her, but Jesus Christ cast them out and healed her. She made changes in her life and became a success story. She sought Jesus Christ with persistence; she sought him with courage; and she sought him with humility. As a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene serves as an inspiring role model for each of us. Alan D. Campbell lives in Brandon, Florida.
